David Hough was born in Cornwall but grew up in the Georgian City of Bath. For most of his working life he was an air traffic controller, based variously in Northern Ireland, Scotland and England. In 2003 he took early retirement and spent his subsequent life immersed in writing.

With thirty novels and several non-fiction books behind him, he has done that he had always want to do before the realities of earning a living and paying a mortgage kicked in. David and his wife, Fionnuala, now live near the coast in Dorset. Their daughter and younger son followed their father into the world of air traffic control. Their elder son is a history teacher.
